Wednesday Jim and I took the green public bus into downtown where we caught the orange public bus to Mismaloya/Boca de Tomatlan, about 20 kilometers south of the city. We got off at the end of the line in Boca and walked down the steep hill to the beach where water taxis were waiting. For 90 pesos we were ferried to Quimixto where we heard there was a spectacular water fall. There was the option of hiring horses for the 1 1/2 kilometer trail, only 200 pesos, but we decided to walk following the odor of horse poop. It was spectacular but took us more than an hour. Pathways chiseled through the rock and deepened during the rainy season by torrential rains. We went up and up, down a little and back up again crossing the river several times only one had a bridge the rest we waded through. Finally we arrived at a small waterfall with a little disappointment and then saw stairs carved into the rock that lead to a tiny restaurant – and there was the cascada, waterfall, in all it’s glory. We ordered a lemonade from the restaurant so we could sit at their table and I climbed down the rocks to put my feet in the icy water filled with foot long fish cruising for food. They did not nibble my feet like they do in cenotes. So I lowered myself into the water and took a swim, unfortunately forgetting that I had tucked my camera into my swimsuit. Oh well I still have my phone camera. The bottom was very gritty sand, yellow in color and the water was totally refreshing. Jim joined me for a dip and then we made our way back down the steep trail which was much easier, but my sandals broke half way down, luckily Jim had an extra pair of flip flops with him. We stopped to talk with young girls who were selling lovely seashells by the walkway and came away with a couple. A water taxi was waiting that took us two bays back for lunch of tostadas de marlin at Las Animas. I walked the beach of this little inlet – just 4 restaurants and about 6 houses – and then back to Boca de Tomatlan by water taxi, up the hill to the bus stop and a two bus rides back home.
