Yesterday was the 6th Grade graduation of my friend Karla Hernandez’s son, Mauricio. It began at 8:00 am at the municipal theater with dance performances from all the other classes in the school, kids dressed in traditional costumes from various states of Mexico.
Presentations of special awards were made by their teacher and diplomas were awarded to all 70 students. Karla had asked me to be Mauricio’s madrina, his godmother for the day, which entailed calming his nerves, walking with him to receive his diploma and later in the evening a dance. I was honored to accept the invitation.
AT 8:00 pm the real party started at a local restaurant, Estrella de Mar. Mothers of the students had baked and cooked for three months, selling their products at the school in order to raise money for this event. Jim and I joined them there: a DJ with very loud music and lots of energy from about 25 graduates. Many families were more prepared than us and brought bags and bags of snacks to keep everyone going until dinner at 10:00 pm. The dancing continued until 2:00 am.
Late in the evening the teacher gave awards to every student. Mauricio’s notoriety was “Papucho”, big man on campus, as every girl wanted to be his girlfriend. He is a terrific dancer!
