I also visited the village of Teotitlan del Valle where most of the families living there are involved in the production and sale of wool rugs known as tapetes. Nelson Perez’s studio was the first stop. He has a large show room with rugs piled high and hanging from the roof. The colors and patterns were magnificent.
He showed us the natural materials used to create dyes for coloring the wool and the vats of dye solution with yarn being colored. All from 100% natural materials, the colors were amazing. I wanted a red rug but there were many to choose from. I also purchased a woven purse and a natural white cotton shall.
Then we stopped at the village market where many stalls were also filled with fantastic woven creations (at a much lower price). I wandered up the hill above the market and found the church on the front of which several huge stones had the white stucco veneer removed to reveal ancient stone carvings. Many of the churches in Mexico were built from dismantled native temples.
